Why Seeing the Work Is the Best Recruiting Tool the Trades Have

By 2030, the U.S. could be short more than two million skilled trades workers. It's not because the work isn't there, and it's not because the pay isn't good. It's because most people have never actually seen what the job looks like.

The old pitch isn't landing

For years, the standard approach to getting people interested in the trades has been the career fair booth, the school assembly, the brochure with a stock photo of someone in a hard hat smiling at a wrench. It's not that this messaging is wrong — it's that it doesn't actually show anything. Nobody chooses a career from a pamphlet.

What's actually working

A growing number of electricians, welders, and other tradespeople have started posting real, unfiltered footage from their job sites — the wins, the mistakes, the boring stretches, the moment something finally clicks. And it's changing minds. In one recent survey of young people, a majority said social media had shaped how they think about a career, and more than half said they'd genuinely considered a trades career as a result.

That tracks. People don't fall in love with an idea of a job. They fall in love with a version of themselves doing it — and that only happens once they can actually see it.

You can't picture yourself in a career you've never actually seen. Once you can, everything else — the qualifications, the apprenticeship, the pay — becomes a question of "how," not "if."

Interest is only step one

Here's the part that gets missed: getting someone excited about welding, plumbing, or scaffolding is genuinely the easy part. The harder question — the one most people quietly get stuck on — is knowing exactly what comes next. Which apprenticeship? Which certification? Is there even a route in if you're not straight out of school?

That gap between "I'm interested" and "I know exactly how to start" is where most potential careers in the trades quietly die.

What we're building at Renzo

This is the thinking behind what we're doing differently. Alongside the training itself, we're building out real footage — of our own courses, our simulations, and our graduates actually on the job — so people can see, honestly, what the work and the path into it really look like. Not a highlight reel. The actual thing.

Because the more clearly someone can see themselves doing the work, the more likely they are to believe it's actually possible for them — whatever their background, and whatever point in life they're starting from.
